Siera Hanks 17, Atherton High, senior Most Likely To . . . win a Nobel Peace Prize. Part of the International Baccalaureate program at Atherton, Siera is also a polyglot, studying Spanish, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. What brought on your fascination with languages? "I'm a stickler for education, and I became fascinated by (Noam) Chomsky's linguistic theory." Who isn't? Um, what is that? (She explains. We don't get it. She dumbs it down for us.) "Basically, I know it is important to be conversant in diferent languages to understand that culture." What's been your favorite class? "I really love Theory of Knowledge; it was like an epistemology class. We did works in translation, so we had to think about books in the context of being a translated work rather than being a work that was originally produced in that language." What else do you like to do? "I'm in my school's Y club, and I'm the service chair. The way that we think about service at my school I'm trying to shif, because right now it's a lot about, oh, if you bring in cans, you get grade points. I want it to be more of an ideological change where it's more about doing things as a part of your education rather than doing good things and you get the result of having a higher grade." What are you most likely to do, careerwise? "Work in a job that requires speaking to people in suits, but in a nice way. I'm really passionate about bringing people education and global citizenship. They're pillars of my thinking." Keenrruy Murillo 10, Kennedy Montessori, ffh grade Most Likely To . . . develop video games. Keenrruy won his school science fair with his magnetic levitating train. His family is from Ecuador and he speaks Spanish at home. He participates in the Advanced Placement and Student Technology Leadership programs at his school. How did you come up with the train? "I thought, maybe I could make something fy using just magnets. One day I woke up and started geting ideas while my parents were sleeping." Were you excited when you won frst place? "I kind of expected it." What else do you like to do? "Play video games. Read interesting books. Right now I'm reading The Adventures of Tintin. This kid reporter goes around solving mysteries." Favorite food? "Seviche." Ella Beames 10, Field Elementary, ffh grade Most Likely To . . . direct the next Lion King. Two years ago, Ella's teachers had to save her life through CPR, learning subsequently that she had an undiagnosed heart condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Since then, she's had a pediatric pacemaker implanted and has started a school drama club, which has seen membership double since last year. Tell us how you got into theater. "I'm really creative, and I thought if kids wanted to express their creativity, theater might be a way to do that. Now we're on our second production, The Litle Mermaid." What's something about theater that you really enjoy? "The costumes. The songs." Who's your favorite actress? "Jennifer Lawrence." So you have your ear cartilage pierced? "No, it's fake. I think it would hurt too much, but they look cool." Very fashionable. "I critique my mom on her clothes a lot." 11.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 49
