style & fashion Pretty Gritty Louisville's Street Style Blog Jessica Stacey 30, lives in the Highlands and is a hair stylist at Gregory Michaels Salon. How would you describe your personal style? "I like to go back to the '90s, grunge. Everything's pretty dark." Why is it important to have a personal sense of style? "It's a way to show the world every day what's going on in your head." How do other people describe how you dress? "In my group of friends, sometimes I'm the eccentric one. They tease me about being goth because I do wear a lot of black. I don't think black always has to be goth. I just think it's fashionable. And you can mix it with anything; it makes something look more edgy and downtown." Why were you drawn to this dress (right in photo)? "This dress is from Pixie Market in New York. I've been drawn to weird fabrics and mixed media in my closet that you can't wear every day, so this excites me because it's a thick, cotton, sweatshirt material but has the interesting panel. Your eye is drawn to it. I'm petite, so I can't pull off a lot of the boxier styles, but having a clear panel in the middle lets you see there's still a shape there. Midriff shirts have been in, but you can't wear those in the winter, so this is a way to get away with that without freezing." Is there a style rule you love to break? "I like to wear shoes that don't necessarily go with an outft. When I feel like I should be wearing a pump, I don't do it." Do you see a common relationship between architecture and fashion? "I do see an element of simplicity in fashion that I like in modern architecture. I love the Victorian buildings in the Highlands, how beautiful and intricate they are, but the older I get, the more drawn I am to super-minimal — downtown lofts, concrete foors. There's a house on Eastern Parkway that is a very modern gray vertical structure with staircases and balconies. I love that house." Interview and photos by Amber Garvey and Casey Chalmers.
