Tara Singh Kali Stephens 8, Louisville Classical Academy, fourth grade 10, Hayfeld Montessori, ffh grade Most Likely To … memorize the dictionary. Most Likely To… make her own theater costumes. Tara won a regional competition to advance to the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee, where she fnished 43rd out of 281 spellers from across the country. Besides English, she also studies Latin, Greek, Hindi and German. Kali's crafs have won her a pile of ribbons at several Kentucky State Fairs. She hand-sews pillows and garments, does cross-stitch, practices origami and creates holiday ornaments. She's also co-writen a play about a mummy. How was your experience at the national spelling bee? "I met so many diferent spellers . . . well, people who love words just like me." How long have you been sewing? "Since second or third grade." Was it hard? "It was, kind of; there were so many distractions as far as the sites." What's your favorite style? "I like origami best. But I like to sew by hand." How do you prepare for a spelling bee? Just go through the dictionary? "I study word lists." How long? "Two hours a day." Every day? (Stares back silently, as if we'd asked if she ate every day.) What do you do for fun? "I play with my litle sister Anya (who's fve) and play the violin. And I'm learning to speak German. I also love to read." What are your favorite subjects? "Latin and Greek. Every teacher I have makes the subject fun." 48 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 11.13 How did you learn to do all this? "My mom taught me. And school." Favorite subjects? "Reading. Harry Poter and the Percy Jackson books." Hobbies? "Karate and gymnastics. I have a green belt with black stripes in karate." Do your friends ask you to make stuf? "All the time."
