The North Building's third foor is currently titled "Home and Away," a
name Lash borrowed from a video that she will show by South African artist
Berni Searle from the early 2000s about refugees trying to make it from
Africa to Europe. "The theme of this foor is: How do we understand our
home and how do we understand other places?" Lash says. Later in the
year, the foor will have a show on sneakers, followed by shows on samurai
and Native American cultures. "I compare myself to an athletic scout who
tours and looks at a lot of different players and is like, 'OK, this guy's the
best lineman, this guy's the best pitcher,'" Lash says. "People think it's very
subjective in art, but it's not in the sense that you're looking at so much all
the time. You have to be like, 'How is this unlike anything else?' Which is a
ridiculously high bar. Then you add the layer of, OK, fne, it's brand new,
but is anyone going to care in 50 years? You never know for sure."
