The new 60,000-square-foot North Building is a world of glass
and metal, with wood-grain concrete walls. An upside-down tree-
like work, installed by artist Spencer Finch, will suspend from the
atrium ceiling and emit different colors through LED gels calibrated
to mimic the daylight in Hodgenville, Kentucky, on Lincoln's
birthday, Feb. 12. The frst-foor Grand Hall will host meetings and
weddings. Wiltshire at the Speed will serve lunch daily.
Outside, a shallow pool of water will fll the building's surrounding
tiles, on which a reclining bronze sculpture by artist Henry Moore
will foat. An adjacent art park will display other sculptures. "I want
the public to get familiar with art, interacting and having picnics
there," director Ghislain d'Humières says. "This is the busiest
walking pass in Louisville. Ten thousand people walk through every
day. This is the reason we want the building to be transparent —
the students and faculty can look and say, 'I want to go inside.'"
