Without a doubt, your

sports the ugliest

The article "Flood
Assurance" (January)
was informative but
did not mention the
1964 food that was
much worse than the
one in 1997. Having
lived on Silver Creek
since birth, I have had
personal experience with food issues all my
life. In '64 a neighbor's house had water at
window level; in '97 the water was just short
of the basement support rafters.

On page 24 of the
February issue (A
Bit of History), a
caption states that
the Cherokee Park
photo is looking at
a mansion that is now gone. This brought up
much discussion at our kitchen table, which
looks out toward that mansion. We are quite
sure it is east of what is now Valletta Lane and
that the mansion is named Ayrestead Estate,
an English Tudor built by Andrew Cowan in
1907. Stand north of Belknap Bridge, and we
think you'll see the mansion peeking through
the trees. Our understanding is that Cowan
was vital to bringing Frederick Law Olmsted
to Louisville and that he donated land to the
parks, convincing others to do the same.
