Thaniel Ion Lee work Thaniel Ion Lee, 37 Favorite medium: Various but "I mostly plan out the works on the computer." thanielionlee.com The intensely creative Lee works in sound, sculpture, mental sculpture (conceptual literature), drawing and graphic arts. No wonder he never sleeps. Lee describes his style as "conceptual art with a Dada leaning." He's infuenced by "games and artists who use rules and regulations to make their work." Among his favorite artists are French-American chess player and painter-sculptor Marcel Duchamp, minimalist Sol LeWitt, musician and artist John Cage, conceptualist Robert Ryman and post-minimalist Richard Tuttle. He would design our magazine cover by taking "an aerial photo of the city and fipping it upside down." If he were not an artist, he'd be a teacher. His frst piece of art came from working in his Incredible Hulk coloring book and "running out of crayons. So I did the whole thing in blues." His art tells him that "the same processes can result in different feelings." Inspiration for Lee "comes at inconvenient moments." Like late at night. "Sometime last year I was up at 1 a.m. and I started to think about the nature of pre-stretched canvases and how I could make work using them but not painting them." From that epiphany came several pieces, including "2 attempts to draw 3 fowers blindfolded." From top, left to right: "Head of Woman" (dye sublimation on masonite); "Bitcanvas" (inkjet mounted on aluminum); "Golden Throne" (mixed media); "Dice Painting No. 2" (acrylic on wood). 10.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 49
