Matthew Weir, 33 Favorite medium: "I like to work with stone, but I don't really have a favorite material." mweir.com We love Weir's dedication to his craft. It takes a lot of training and experience to produce these amazing creations. They are not just sculptures but mental puzzles. "I don't really have much of a direct artistic infuence within the feld of art. I'm mostly inspired by scientifc information, evolutionary themes — and behavior and nature, of course. I suppose if I were to reference a group, though, aside from the artists of the Renaissance era, I really appreciate the art and artists of Dada." For a Louisville Magazine cover … "I would make a colorful design suggesting the Plinko board from The Price Is Right, with lots of pieces moving past and around all the pegs in the way. That, or water fowing around a bed of pebbles, which could be one of the many ways to visualize the make-it-happen attitude that I feel is everywhere in Louisville." "If I were not an artist, I'd be a naturalist specializing in ecology and zoology — but who's to say, really?" "Aside from drawings, which I produced constantly, the frst artwork I remember creating was a small series of papier-mâché masks that I made on the back porch of my childhood home. The experience of the masquerade was exciting and profound to me then, and now." Matthew Weir "What I appreciate about Louisville as an artist, sculpturally speaking, is the great lineage of artists training artists and offering a place to learn, work or apprentice. I'm really proud to be a descendant of the long line of sculptors and educators working in Louisville." From top: "Earth Measure" (Indiana limestone and earth, a work in progress at Bernheim Forest); "At Play in Geologic Time" (Indiana limestone, Vandalia, Ohio); "Panthera Tigris" (bronze and Indiana limestone, St. X campus).
