micro Q SPOTTING poll On the University of Louisville's campus, on the Wednesday before the U of L-UK football game, we asked 50 people this question: Will Teddy Bridgewater win the Heisman Trophy? 38 YES On a railing on the marble staircase leading to the York Street entrance of the Louisville Free Public Library's main branch. Submitted by reader Jaime Fitch, 36, arts and humanities teacher at Eastern High School. "My children Chloe and James love to search for feurs-de-lis throughout Louisville," Fitch says. (Send us an unexpected feur-de-lis spotting of your own. It just might make a future issue. editorial@loumag.com, subject: feur-de-lis.) 12 NO "He's the best pocket passer in the NCAA." — Taaj Hill, 19, U of L student "Who is that? I'm sure he's a fne young man." — Andrew Bell, 18, U of L student "We have to win every game, though, or he won't be in the running." — James Hurt, 18, U of L student "He doesn't play anyone good. It will show when he is compared to others." — Dustin Markwell, 22, U of L Student WELOVE Keep your eyes on the road because the image peering down from billboards totally discombobulates the senses. You didn't realize Mayor Greg Fischer could so deftly pull off a middle-aged, uppercrust Beavis and Butt-head, did ya? The Louisville Metro Police Foundation — a sort of booster club for local offcers — is behind the campaign. The foundation's director, Barry Denton, says the goal is to show police how much the community appreciates them with a "trendy" visual campaign. So, "LMPD Rocks!" While some billboards feature everyday citizens, it's the images of local "celebs" — Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, the Rev. Kevin Cosby, Fischer — that stick with us (and make us chuckle a little). One offcer told Denton that while getting coffee at a gas station, a passerby offered a robust "LMPD Rocks!" Denton admits the billboards have caused confusion as well. For instance: Did our tax dollars pay for this? (No.) Why does the mayor support the Texas Longhorns? (Denton shrugs that off as a generational thing.) That fexed index and pinky — all other fngers respectfully crouched — stand as the universal rock 'n' roll salute. Just don't put Fischer in one of those rocker-style spiked collars. 10.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 19
