Special Advertising Section Breast Cancer Patients Have a Home at the Floyd Memorial Cancer Center of Indiana Floyd Memorial Cancer Center of Indiana has spent the past two years adding services and fne-tuning their programs in an effort to become the frst and only breast cancer center of excellence in Southern Indiana. What does this means for patients? They have a home like never before. Multidisciplinary Panel of Experts Nearly every breast cancer case at the Cancer Center of Indiana is reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel of breast cancer experts before a fnal treatment plan is determined. This gives patients access to input from multiple specialists at one time, simplifying the treatment planning process, and providing several options to choose from, each tailored to their unique needs. Genetic Testing and Clinical Trials Knowledge gained from genetic testing provides diffcult, but potentially lifesaving options. When a person is diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 50, or when two or more relatives on the same side of the family have the same type of cancer, genetic testing is suggested. In addition, the Cancer Center offers a wide variety of clinical trials so patients have access to the most cutting edge care available while contributing to the health of future generations. Options for Women at High Risk Mastectomies are not the only prevention option for patients at high risk for breast cancer. Board certifed oncologist, Roseline Okeke, MD, explains that while mastectomy is merited in many cases, there are also less invasive options: "Results from multiple breast cancer prevention trials indicate that hormonal therapies given to women not diagnosed with breast cancer, but determined to be at high risk, can reduce their chances of developing the disease by as much 50 percent." These therapies, combined with lifestyle modifcations can offer dramatic risk reduction with fewer potential complications. The Cancer Center of Indiana offers women every resource available to determine and manage their risk. Navigation and Survivorship "As an oncology nurse for over 35 years and the sister of a breast cancer survivor, I've seen too many patients in need of assistance simply fall through the cracks," said breast cancer nurse navigator, Kristy Helm, RN, OCN. The Cancer Center offers patients a multitude of services including dietitians to help with nutrition counseling, physical therapists to help patients overcome the physical effects of cancer and fnancial counselors and social workers to help sort out all the complications of cancer. The survivorship program follows patients after treatment to ensure they're staying up to date on their screenings and ongoing treatments, but also to determine whether they need additional assistance such as rehabilitation or emotional support.
