Sister Bean's Coffee House 5225 New Cut Road // 364- 0082 A locally owned coffeehouse that sits directly across from the Iroquois Park Amphithe- ater, Sister Bean's serves fresh-brewed coffee, a selection of Danish pastries, Comfy Cow ice cream and, at the drive-through window, $1 coffee on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunergos Coffee 306 W. Woodlawn Ave. // 368-2820 sunergoscoffee.com This laid-back Beechmont neighborhood spot roasts its own coffee (its back-room roaster is visible through a large window). Comfy couch- es could have come from grandma's house. (Other area locations.) Catrachos 414 E. Kenwood Drive // 366-4797 This small store carries Mex- ican goods, including lots of hot spices and sauces like puya and ancho chile pods, jalapeño peppers and cobula picarnas hot sauce, as well as an impressive selection of votive candles. Tom's Fruit Market 6722 Strawberry Lane // 367-8596 Owned by Tommy Thomp- son, this open-air fruit, vegetable and flower market has lower-than-East-End prices that draw a loyal and citywide customer base. ValuMarket 5301 Mitscher Ave. // 361-9285 valumarket.com Appropriately for the ethnically diverse neighborhood that the store serves, this Louis- ville-based supermarket offers a wider variety of international foods than most large grocery stores. The live-bass aquarium is a notable feature. Vietnam Oriental Market 5019 S. Third St. // 361-7846 This relatively spacious market has one of the larger selections of Asian food, from fresh vegetables to quail eggs to pork stomachs, hearts and intestines. BARS/NIGHTCLUBS Hoops Grill & Sports Bar 6733 Strawberry Lane // 375- 4667 Dozens of wide-screen TVs hang from the rafters, mostly tuned to sports events. Arrive early if you want a seat on Sundays during NFL season. Peppermint Lounge 5343 Mitscher Ave. // 361-9450 A vintage neighborhood dive, Peppermint offers two pool tables, a basketball-shooting game and a well-used foosball table. Thursday is karaoke night. CLOTHING/SHOES Coffman's 4951 Manslick Road // 361- 1601 coffmansinlouisville.com Coffman's carries brand-name work clothes like Carhartt, Dickies and Wolverine work boots; athletic and school uniforms; trophies and plaques; and offers custom embroidery. Iroquois Shoes and More 5324 S. Third St. // 364-0800 You can find shoes, clothes and more (hence the name) in this compact store located in the Iroquois Manor Shop- ping Center. Swags Sport Shoes 7415 S. Third St. Road // 368-2443 swagssportshoes.com Many local runners consider this Louisville's premier store for running shoes and equipment. Owned by former Western Kentucky University long-distance star and Derby miniMarathon champion Swag Hartel, the store spe- cializes in hard-to-find shoe widths. Swag's also has a location on Westport Road. Twice as Nice Con- signment 4314 Taylor Blvd. // 367-6423 With an eclectic array of clothes, toys and acces- sories on consignment, Twice as Nice specializes in plus-size clothes, both new and consigned. Also features new DaVinci bridal gowns. Wow! Que Barato 5324 S. Third St. // 368-0490 This clothing shop is one of many located in the Iroquois Manor Shopping Center. HOME/ FURNISHINGS Girard's Hardware 5101 S. Third St. // 650-8773 girardshardware.com The kind of old-style neigh- borhood hardware store they don't make anymore. Check out the metal carousel nail bin, topped by an ancient scale, near the back of the store. Rice Box Oriental 6810 Southside Drive // 380- 2209 Chinese fare with many sea- food options. Rubbie's Barbeque & Brew 6905 Southside Drive // 367- 0007 rubbies.net A quintessential neighborhood bar with adjoining restaurant that attracts a regular and vociferous crowd of locals. Good jukebox with an eclectic selection, from Buck Owens to My Morning Jacket. Diner is known for its steaks. Santa Fe Grill 3000 S. Third St. // 634-3722 Many say it's the most authentic Mexican food in the city. Don't be put off by the pink-and-purple exterior or the funkiness of the tiny dining area. It's good and it's cheap — but bring cash, because they don't take credit cards. Senor Iguanas 3105 S. Second St. // 368-0876 eatatiguanas.com This Mexican restaurant near the University of Louisville always packs in the eclectic crowd of coeds and South End locals. The margaritas pack a tart, sweet punch. Also has locations in east Louisville and Southern Indiana. Vietnam Kitchen 5339 Mitscher Ave. // 363- 7535 vietnamkitchen.net The first — and, many say, still the best — authentic Vietnam- ese restaurant in Louisville is renowned for its pho. The bun bo hue is another popular dish. Wagner's Pharmacy 3113 S. Fourth St. // 375-3800 wagnerspharmacy.com This south Louisville icon, just a horseshoe toss from Churchill Downs' barns, will still sell you prescription drugs and vet supplies, but most people go there for the food and the backside racetrack ambiance. Third St. // 366-9830 Has all your basic Asian-mar- ket standbys: Lotus rootlets in brine, prawn crackers, Madras curry paste, dried betel nuts, shredded squid, mung bean cakes . . . need we say more? African Foodway & Cosmetics 4314 Taylor Blvd. // 384- 3667 With products from Liberia, Kenya and points between, this small store caters main- ly to African immigrants, who can find such home-country staples as cassava leaf, fafu flour, powdered yam, tapioca starch and an assortment of imported cosmetics. Tuqa Food Mart 7141 Southside Drive // 363-2670 This tiny Bosnian-owned grocery features halal meat and such delicacies as stuffed eggplant in oil, pomegranate molasses and sour fruit paste. Binh Phuoc Grocery 5301 S. Third St. // 366-7002 This Vietnamese grocery across from Iroquois Manor is overflowing (think boxes stacked in aisles) with Asian food, including pickled sour bamboo shoots and dried black fungus. Cocoberry Pops 323 W. Woodlawn Ave. // 414-7677 cocoberrypops.com Popsicles using the freshest ingredients around. Cuban Food Market 5422 New Cut Road // 361- 0299 Its name speaks for itself: You'll find lots of beans, rice, tortilla flour and a wide selection of Goya brand products. DaLat's Gateaux & Cafe 6915 Southside Drive // 368-9280 If it weren't for the Vietnam- ese names of some of the sandwiches here, you might think you'd walked into a French patisserie. Take in the wonderfully sweet aromas and try the Hong Kong buns and the chilled, coconut-milk-based desserts in the freezer. Dong Phuong Grocery Store 6705 Strawberry Lane // 363-0208 This Vietnamese grocery, one of the larger Asian mar- kets in the South End, car- ries a variety of Southeast Asian products, including an impressive assortment of curry pastes and powders.
