Opposite page: The back of the house amply displays its modernist sensibil- ity; and the living room, with its sleek rope chairs, Kentucky-source art and plantation shutters. As luck would have it, the house came on the market in the nick of time. With 3,600 square feet on three floors, there was plenty of space for a growing family. A double lot gave it one of the biggest back yards in the neighborhood, and it had been owned by the same family — "three generations lived here," Elizabeth explains — since it was built at the turn of the 20th century. "We closed on the house at the end of May," she says, "and Ella was born on the sixth of June." Tat first year, they painted, added cen- tral air and more than doubled the size of the only full bath. Tree more bundles of joy in quick succession — Jess, Marjorie and Silas — brought further improvements to a halt until 2010, when they hired Architec- tural Artisans' Jeff Rawlins to come up with a plan to modernize the interior. Rawlins offers an outside-the-box ap- proach to retooling historic buildings. In- cluded in his commercial portfolio are such Main Street gems as Patrick O'Shea's and the residential and commercial development The new screened porch (top), with its backlit "Gantt chart"; the gam- ut-styled dining room (above); and the new family room. 5.12 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE [87]
