Founders William Schuetze and Graham Cooke get advice from former Louisvillians Tom and Louis Borders, owners of the Borders chain. 1980s Two more locations open. 1996 Lime Kiln Lane location opens. 2003 Borders, which fled for bankruptcy in 2011, acquires the two remaining stores. Casa Grisanti won from '86-'89 romantic dinner; Italian restaurant; and other categories 1959 The white tablecloth Italian restaurant opens on East Liberty Street. 1985 Chefs Dean Corbett (Corbett's) and Dominic Serratore (Ditto's) and so many others get their start here. Maitre d' Vincenzo Gabriele leaves and soon opens Vincenzo's with a similar concept. 1991 Closes, leaving behind more casual family restaurants: Mamma Grisanti's and Ferd Grisanti's, also BOL winners. Bacon's won from '88-'99 women's clothing; department store; and other categories 1845 Peddler Jeremiah Bacon opens the frst store. 1876 Since opening, the store has quadrupled in size. 1901 Opens its West Market Street location, with a spiraling atrium. 1945 Celebrates its centennial. 1950s Opens several suburban stores, starting with St. Matthews. 1972 Flagship West Market store closes. 1982 Moves back downtown to the Galleria. 1998 Regional chain Dillard's buys out all Bacon's locations. Byone Bess Lyn's Paradise Cafe won from '94-2010 breakfast; family restaurant; and other categories 1991 The eclectic restaurant with killer biscuits and jam opens on Frankfort Avenue. 1994 Moves to Barret Avenue. '90s-2000s Receives national press from countless news outlets. 2013 Closes abruptly. ear X-tacy won from '94-2007 music store; CDs/records/ tapes; and other categories 1985 John Timmons starts selling his personal record collection, naming his store after the band XTC. The store changes locations three times in the next several years. 2000 The Foo Fighters play to a crowd that spills out the door. 2001 Moves to its humongous Bardstown Road store near Eastern Parkway. 2010 Changes in the music industry force the store to downsize. Moves to Douglass Loop. 2011 Closes. Splash won from '88-'90 place for people watching; dance foor; and other categories 1987 The pink bar — which foats on the Ohio River alongside Islands restaurant downtown — hosts aerobics dance contests, as shown on a recent YouTube video marked with this date (very entertaining). We can't fnd much else on this place, but readers gave it a BOL fve times. Phoenix Hil Tavern won from '86-2000 nightclub; place for live music; and other categories 1976 Freshly 21, Ben Rogers opens the soon-to-be- notorious nightclub. '80s and '90s Many great musical acts, including Meatloaf, BB King, Lucinda Williams, the Flaming Lips and the Ramones, play PHT. Mid-2000s Less of a hotspot, the bar still attracts Kings of Leon, Vanilla Ice, Miley Cyrus and Aaron Carter. 2015 Rogers, now 60, thanks the public for 40 years of business when he abruptly closes PHT (and Jim Porter's Good Time Emporium).
