This year Lebowski Fest co-founder Will Russell received a cease-anddesist order (aka the middle fnger) from Paul Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman) afer organizing a festival in honor of the beloved Gen X popculture icon. The so-called "PeeWee Over Louisville" event was to include a dance-of and parade. But when Pee-wee protested, "canceled" became the not-so-secret word. Orb wins Derby! The 5-1 favorite, this late-closing colt pounded through slop (more on that later) to win the 139th Run for the Roses underneath the famed Twin Spires (hiding behind Jennifer Lawrence and Pee-wee.) He's since retired. It's all golf games and 4:30 cocktails from here on out. Kentucky Kingdom is coming back! Over the summer, Louisville businessman Ed Hart announced that a lease had been fnalized between his investment group and the Kentucky State Fair Board. The countdown is now on for May 2014, when the amusement park and expanded water park will reopen afer siting idle since 2009. Hart promises it will be "bigger, beter and weter" than before. Translation: Suck it, Holiday World. A bourbon bandit's on the loose! A bourbon bandit's on the loose! The thief somehow snatched 65 cases of bourbon that's nearly impossible to get your hands on — 20-year-old Pappy Van Winkle. Total worth? Around $26,000. In June, an SUV (played here by a Hot Wheels miniature) barreled through the front door of the Mag Bar on Second and Magnolia Streets. Amazingly, no one was critically hurt. But the front door's fed up. This is the second time in three years it's been smashed into by reckless drivers. Confeti! Parades! We're number one!!! Exclamation points!!! For the frst time in 27 years, March Madness ended with the Cards becoming national champs afer defeating the Michigan Wolverines 82-76. Look closely. Who's that with a bandage on his lower limb? Kevin Ware, of course. The toughest damn athlete this world's ever seen! 12.13 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 57
