"We thought about calling it Flight School because we teach people to get ny," says
Desmond Duncan, 28, who owns and runs the street-wear boutique Established, on
Muhammad Ali Boulevard between Second and Third streets, with friends Ronel Brown,
also 28, and Leon Oldham, 32. Street wear, according to Oldham: "Skateboarding, hip-hop,
punk, surmng, grafmti. Shake it all up together." Duncan, also a carpenter for JCPS, met
Brown in middle school. While freshmen at U of L, they created a now-defunct clothing line
called Cloud Nyne and traveled to stores in Atlanta, Chicago, San Diego. "Eventually we
were like, 'Opening our own boutique would be dope,'" Duncan says. (Oldham and Brown
met at the health-care company where they work.) Why open in no-man's-land? "What's
here? We are. This is the spot to be because we can create our own identity," Duncan says.
"Pioneers," Oldham says.
"Trailblazers," Duncan reiterates. "Even if we're not successful, we're still paving the way
for whoever comes next."
