80 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 7.18 THE PIN-UP Hell or High Water 112 W. Washington St. Hell or High Water has been billed as a downtown speakeasy with a sneaky, art gallery entrance, but its brand of discreetness seemed laughable when a friend, as though clutching a juicy piece of gossip, reported to me that the ladies' room wallpaper (pictured here) was at first glance a Victorian-looking pattern, but upon closer inspection was actually characters engaging in erotic acts. It's called Rendez-vous and was designed by a Belgian company called Atelier Blink. (The same pattern lines the men's-room walls, with the black and white reversed.) I contacted Hell or High Water to find out how and why they chose it. In true speakeasy fashion, the bar responded with: "At this time the owners would prefer not to disclose details about the bar's bathroom wallpaper." — Mary Chellis Austin Photo by Gail Kamenish
