Thus its name — the Hollywood Steak House, situated on the northwest corner of Third Street and what was then Avery Avenue (now Cardinal Boulevard). Built in an octagonal shape with curvy counters and amusement-park-like fluorescent lighting by Greek immigrant Nicholas Masterson, it succeeded the restaurateur's previous double-venture at the same spot: an ice-cream shop and a restaurant called the Little Mansion. In 1962, after an extensive remodel, the Hollywood became Masterson's, a University of Louisville mainstay until it died by wrecking ball in 2010. — Jack Welch
