88 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.17 ARTS MEET At a young age, Alex Serpenঞni (this page, top right) would often find herself mindlessly doodling. That's how it all started. "I kind of fell in love with art hard, and I wanted to learn all of it," says Serpentini, who has degrees in photography and glassmaking and is currently studying programming and coding. In one of her ongoing photo collections, "Years of Sleep," she captures people sleeping. "I now tell everybody, 'Hey, if you fall asleep around me, is it OK if I take a photo of you?'" she says. For another project, "Our Neighborhood," Serpentini recorded different people naming off the planets in the solar system, to show how "we're not all from the same place even though we share the same planets." Through Dec. 30 at Zephyr Gallery on East Market Street, she's part of a group show titled "Failure in Progress." Serpentini's contribution, "Almost Something," is an interactive, augmented- reality piece that allows users to look through an iPad camera to reveal lines of text throughout the room — all anonymously submitted confessions ("I always thought I would learn a couple languages by now"; "I've never had sex") from a survey she conducted online. "It's things that we carry around with us," she says. — Nick Amon
