Mackenzie Smith 12, Highland, seventh grade Mackenzie's artwork can be seen on the side of a TARC bus. She takes ceramics at school and does art at home and in classes at Spot5 art studio in Clifton. Why art? I've never really been interested in playing; my friends had playrooms and I had an art room. Who's your favorite artist? Picasso. It's really cool to see his techniques. What makes someone a good artist? Being able to express yourself, and not being afraid for people to critique your art because that will make you better. Always keep drawing, never stop; keep a journal with you. What do you want to be when you grow up? I want to have art be the main thing, but I kind of like fashion design. Max Abner 17, Youth Performing Arts School, senior Max has published three plays. He studies acting, playwriting and directing and considers involvement in the arts to be a life essential, "like hygiene or something." What do you like about theater? I like the idea of theater being a thing that puts people in a place that they think they know and then moves people to a place where they're maybe a little bit lost. You're supposed to brush your teeth before you go to bed. I think you should also go to the theater every now and then. Who is your favorite playwright? Edward Albee and Samuel Beckett. A lot of my heroes are not theater people. Bob Dylan is one of the people I most look up to. I think that you can learn a lot about acting through Bob Dylan. 11.12 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE [73]
