Benjamin Blackford 6, Sacred Heart Model School, kindergarten Once afraid of storms, Benjamin learned to forecast the weather. According to his teachers, he is more accurate than the TV weather teams. He loves space and now studies the solar system. What's your favorite part of the solar system? The Oort cloud. It's like a place with trillions of comets. What else do you like about the solar system? I watched the meteor shower. I saw a white one with a tail and a yellow one that looked like a ball of fire. I went to the planetarium and saw Saturn, but I didn't see its moon, Titan, very much. What do you want to be when you grow up? An astronomer. What's your favorite food? Broccoli, with salt on it. Aimee Turner 17, Ballard, senior Aimee ranked third worldwide in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair by the Society of Exploration Geophysicists for environmental sciences and has won full scholarships to several colleges. What was your project? I measured landslides and how they affected the riverbank. The Green River (south-central Kentucky) is one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the U.S., and a major flood, it's estimated, would take out almost 50 percent of endangered species. How did you get into the marine biology part? I love to sea kayak, but we're in Kentucky so there's no sea to kayak in. I go to the Green River with my dad. It's a pretty big part of my life. What's your dream job? I really want to work for the EPA. [72] LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 11.12
