42 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.17 Special Advertising Section They've got independent living down to a fine art at Masonic Homes of Kentucky For many people, creating artwork isn't just a job or hobby — it's a passion. For 79-year-old Nancy Wentzel, resident of the Village Active Lifestyle Community, it's her life. "I try to paint every day. It's the thing that gets me out of bed," said Nancy, who has painted hundreds of oil paintings over the years. Like many independent living residents at Masonic Homes, Nancy embraces the opportunity to create something with her own hands. Expressing oneself through art has benefits not only for the spirit, but also the mind and body, whether old or young. Masonic Homes strives to offer places for independent living residents to enjoy these benefits, and even has a community craft shop on campus. Here, residents interested in woodworking can enjoy creating projects out of various types of wood, including cherry, oak, locust and walnut. The shop is fully equipped with a table saw, band saw, jig saw, drill press, jointer, planer, lathe, router, miter and grinding wheel. Similarly, a new art studio and gallery is currently under construction at the Meadow Active Lifestyle Community for residents to eventually use and enjoy, creating another outlet to help express creativity. Artists like Nancy find solace in the arts-friendly environment at Masonic Homes, and say they are looking forward to using the new art studio when it is complete. Nancy isn't the only artist finding a peaceful haven at Masonic Homes. Charlotte "Toddy" Price, a native Louisvillian, lives at Miralea Active Lifestyle Community and is also a respected artist well known for her sculptures. At 91, Charlotte has now retired from sculpting, but her works of art can be seen across Louisville, including the St. Francis with Animals sculpture at Saint Francis of Assisi Church on Bardstown Road; a sculpture of a young girl, Iva, at the Home of the Innocents on Market Street; and the figure of Pan, originally on The Belvedere and now located in Kennedy Court Park in Crescent Hill, among others. Incorporating dance, music, song and literature into her sculptures has been Charlotte's goal and she has held juried exhibitions at The Speed Art Museum, the Louisville Water Tower and the Southern Baptist Seminary, among others.
