28 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.17 A BIT TO DO "We call it our virtual spaceship," says Paula McGuffey, assistant director of the Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium at U of L. Prior to the current planetarium — a 55-foot-diameter, 360-degree dome that opened in 2001 — the previous one had been open since 1962. For decades, it has screened a rotation of public shows, including Dynamic Earth, which explores the planet's climate and is narrated by Liam Neeson, and Supervolcanos, narrated by Benedict Cumberbatch, plus a handful of laser shows themed to music by the Beatles, Metallica, Radiohead and, by far the most popular, Pink Floyd. This month, the planetarium is gearing up for the much-anticipated total solar eclipse on Aug. 21. It's partnering with WDRB and will be at the Kentucky Exposition Center at the State Fair with a portable planetarium. Protective eyewear for viewing the eclipse is on sale in the planetarium gift shop. The U of L site will show a live feed from NASA on the 21st and have a solar telescope in the courtyard. "People are pulling kids out of school for this," McGuffey says. "It will be super." — MCA Photo by Terrence Humphrey THE BIT
