18 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.17 The neighborhood kids in this 1932 photo, taken in front of long-gone Carrie Deeb & Sons dry-goods store at 2608 Portland Avenue, are holding up free fun-information booklets provided by the sneaker maker Keds ("The kind of shoes you wear as a boy determine the kind of feet you'll have as a man"). That's young Phil Deeb on the pony (note his crazy-cool wingtips), and two of the boys behind are Eli and Gilbert Shaheen, sons of Sam and Frieda Shaheen, who owned the (still in business) dry-goods store next door. Also on the bustling 2600 block that year were two restaurants, three grocers, two pool halls, a third dry- goods store, two confectioners, a shoe-repair shop, a clothes presser, a soft-drink bottler and a Salvation Army outlet. The storefront — definitely worse for wear — remains, its signage identifying it as a place to get furniture, appliances, electronics and jewelry. — Jack Welch A BIT OF HISTORY FROM U OF L ARCHIVES AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS
