DERBY CITY CHOP SHOP BEST BARBERSHOP RC Are there any hairstyles you're sick of seeing/cutting? "The top knot or man bun is certainly at the top of that list and has been since it began. Years from now, it will have joined the ranks of the perm, the bowl cut and the mullet." Any styles you wish were more popular? "Personally, I'd like to see some styles from the '40s, or '30s even, get some attention. Similar to what you see now but with more length all around and more combing options." What makes a good beard? "A beard is a product of neglect initially, and I think a lot of guys are really overthinking it these days. Wash it regularly, condition it if it's dry, have it trimmed and enjoy it. If it's patchy in spots, or itchy, or causing you any concern at all, shave it off. You'll probably be a lot happier." Are there any hair products no guy should live without? "I'd suggest picking up a good shampoo, a good conditioner and a water-based pomade that suits your hairstyle." Are there any common grooming mistakes men make? "Probably the most common one we see is guys trying to stretch out the haircut by shaving their necks. Understandable, but it's rare for them to get it right. To me, a jagged neckline is more noticeable than neck hair." It seems fitting that the owner of the most popular barbershop in town is taking his time opening a new one. The Derby City Chop Shop runs on patience. The queue reached an extreme on Thurby, with 56 names on the list. People were waiting up to four hours, so long that the Chop Shop's app, which alerts you when your spot is coming up, reached a limit and started drop- ping people. Adam Hedgespeth spent a couple years searching for the second location before settling on a spot in Germantown next to Monnik Beer Co. The new space will have an extra couple hundred square feet of breathing room — desperately needed for a business that averages more than 100 haircuts a day. Hedgespeth hopes to open the new location in September, but it will require extensive renovations, and he's not com- mitting to a date just yet. For now, read through Hedgespeth's shop talk while you're waiting for your turn in the chair. (1233 Bardstown Road) — Dylon Jones
