And that's just in the past five years. If anything can break the curse, it's Time 4 Thai. At least that's what regular/Louisville Magazine managing editor Mary Chellis Austin says. Varanese 2106 Frankfort Ave. // 899- 9904 varanese.com A jazzy place in every regard, from the free-form menu to the nattily dressed musicians who provide background sounds for your dinner. Volare 2300 Frankfort Ave. // 894- 4446 volare-restaurant.com The city's second upscale Italian restaurant, after Vincenzo's, has become a fixture in Clifton. In the bar, snag a seat (or a high-top) if you can. Zen Garden 2240 Frankfort Ave. // 895- 9114 zengardenasian.com This all-vegetarian Asian eatery has won a Best of Louisville award in the vege- tarian restaurant category. OTHER FOOD Annie May's Sweet Cafe 3110 Frankfort Ave. // 384- 2667 anniemayssweetcafe.com Hey, allergy sufferers, a bak- ery just for you — no gluten, nuts or soy. Cakes, cookies, brownies and pies that you'd mistake for the real deal. Bourbon Barrel Foods 2710 Frankfort Ave. // 618- 0939 bourbonbarrelfoods.com Bourbon Barrel Foods' retail shop sells the company's famous Bluegrass Soy Sauce, bourbon-smoked sea salt/pepper/paprika/ etc., and bitters we can't get enough of. The Comfy Cow 2221 Frankfort Ave. // 409- 4616 thecomfycow.com A touch of pale pink for Frankfort Avenue — oh, and scads of ice cream flavors and other sweets. Desserts by Helen 3500 Frankfort Ave. // 451-7151 dessertsbyhelen.com Desserts by Helen's website says its blueberry coffee cake serves 12 people. Problem is, it's so good that we'd actually ballpark that number at, say, two. See if you can take just one bite of the Orange Dreamsicle cake. Nancy's Bagel Grounds 2101 Frankfort Ave. // 895- 8323 nancysbagels.com Devotees of the tradition- ally made bagel rave about Nancy's, including its spin- ach feta and "everything" bagel choices. As opposed to ordering cream cheese on the side, we like the crew at Nancy's to smear it directly onto our bagel. One of our favorite "desserts" in town: cinnamon raisin bagel with blueberry cream cheese. Pet Wants 1718 Frankfort Ave. // 627- 0026 petwantseastlouisville.com Healthy options for Rover. Please & Thank You 2341 Frankfort Ave. // 432- 8614 pleaseandthankyoulouisville. com See Butchertown/Phoenix Hill/Irish Hill listing. Vint Coffee 2309 Frankfort Ave. // 894- 8060 heinebroscoffee.com The only Vint remaining after the merger with Heine Broth- ers', there's a certain contin- gent of folks who swear by its — and only its — coffee. You could waste hours away on the patio. We know because we've done exactly that too many times to count. BARS/ NIGHTCLUBS Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot 3204 Frankfort Ave. // 895- 3223 frankfortavenuebeerdepot.com The out-front smoker and picnic tables full of hard-core regulars tell you this is no place for namby-pambies, but even they go there for the pulled pork. The putt-putt course is known as Beerhala. The Hub Louisville 2235 Frankfort Ave. // 777- 1505 hublouisville.com A cavernous bar-restau- rant-nightclub playground. The Manhattan Project 2010 1B Frankfort Ave. // 749-8925 themanhattanprojectky.com This hard-to-spot sports bar behind Nancy's Bagel Grounds has TVs as far as the eye can see and a menu that would make B-Dubs blush. CLOTHING/ SHOES 5-0-Lou 2235 Frankfort Ave., Suite 104 // 212-0927 5-0-lou.com This shop that sells products by local artists helps fill the void left by Why Louisville (R.I.P.).
