LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 4.17 33 A BIT OF HISTORY FROM U OF L ARCHIVES AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS You see fedoras, homburgs, boaters, newsboys, cloches, buckets, turbans — but just one of those now- ubiquitous wide-brim floppy sun hats (right side, center) in this 1929 Derby photo. Newsreel and still photographers plan strategy on the track itself. Maybe that's radio announcer Clem McCarthy on the grandstand roof. On the short apron of grass between the grandstand boxes and the track's rail, convivial contentment is the name of the game among the sea of swells hoping the good weather holds for the next few hours. It won't. A wind-driven downpour described by the New York Times as exhibiting "tropical fury" will deluge the grounds before and during the Derby and obliterate saddle numbers and silks colors. Smallish and scrawny gelding Clyde Van Dusen, named after his trainer, a former jockey, will quickly grab the lead from the 20th post position and use special shoes made for mud-running to slosh his way to a slow but easy victory amid a near- deserted trackscape. — Jack Welch
