LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 3.17 85 Special Advertising Section Ahyauna Ellis Beat the Odds through Metro College and UPS Partnership Ahyauna Ellis started working at UPS when she was 18 years old, inspired by her father, Kevin Ellis, a 24-year UPS veteran. "I was employed with UPS and a member of the Metropolitan College program for seven wonderful years," Ahyauna explained. "During those years I was afforded the opportunity to obtain an Associate's of Applied Science in Elementary Education and a Bachelor's degree in Social Work." Metropolitan College is a Kentucky partnership between UPS, the University of Louisville and Jefferson Community and Technical College. Participating students work third shift at UPS to get full- time undergraduate tuition paid to U of L or JCTC, as well as book reimbursement, bonuses and other benefits. Ahyauna remembers, "If it had not been for my mother and father encouraging me to take part in this program, I don't think I would have the success I have today." During those seven years she worked third shift at UPS and went to school during the day. This was a laborious journey because it took a lot of hard work and sleepless nights. Throughout the journey, UPS paid Ahyauna's college tuition, as well as providing semester bonuses, text book reimbursements, scheduled time off for major assignments and presentations, and a student-employee computer lab. UPS and Metro College hold a very special place in Ahyauna's heart. "I didn't have the money to pay for college, and because of certain life events, finishing my undergraduate studies took longer than expected." The Metro College program gave Ahyauna the finances and support she needed to beat the odds and lay a sure foundation for future success.
