kosair.org LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.16 85 More than 15 years ago, in his home country of Nicaragua, Marlon Obando Solano would sit on a stack of newspapers and, with hammers and carving knives, turn stones, seeds, shells and wood into jewelry. "For my friends," he says. He met his wife Amy in Nicaragua, and in 2005, 10 days after they moved to her hometown of Louisville, the couple set up a booth at the Cherokee Triangle Art Fair. "We pretty much sold out," she says. They now run Naturaleza Organic Jewelry out of their Audubon Park home, where Marlon converted a sliver of their 2½-car garage into a studio with a hole saw, lathe and mandrels. The 41-year-old's focus is wedding rings ($800 on the high end) made from used bourbon barrels, Nicaraguan coyol seeds and nacascolo wood, and even deer antlers. "Sometimes people will send us wood from a tree in their yard," Amy says. Marlon has carved inlay depictions of Denali, animal footprints, Mayan numerology. After he glues the wood to gold, silver or platinum, he cures the epoxy in an old filing cabinet he transformed into an oven with a baking pan and parts from a toaster, hair dryer and drill. "Everything I make," Marlon says, "I invented." — Josh Moss FEBRUARY 2016 $4.70 For advertising information, call 625-0100 or email advertising@loumag.com The bourbon issue Plus Fine Dining!
