34 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 1.17 A Promising Investigational Therapy in Louisville for Those Suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea For millions of adults, Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a daily struggle, depriving sufferers of deep, restful sleep. Caused by obstruction of the upper airway, OSA is characterized by repetitive pauses in breathing during sleep and is usually associated with a reduction in blood oxygen saturation. An individual with OSA is rarely aware of having difficulty breathing. Commonly associated with snoring, OSA is recognized as a problem by others witnessing the episodes or is suspected because of its effects on the body. If left untreated, OSA can affect the heart and brain leading to high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, diabetes and stroke. The current standard of care for OSA is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Ninety percent of patients diagnosed with OSA are prescribed CPAP therapy; however, compliance is poor with only about half continuing treatment. THN Sleep Therapy™ is an investigational therapy being studied under an FDA approved protocol. Advanced ENT & Allergy in Louisville is one of only a few national sites participating in the THN3 pivotal study. The study is evaluating an implanted device designed to reduce or eliminate sleep apnea episodes. Dr. Andrew Gould of Advanced ENT & Allergy is optimistically looking forward to the study's published results: "My personal experience implanting Imthera devices has been very encouraging." Heat helps to remind us we are thirsty, but in the winter you need to remind yourself. Look for hydration mixes low in sugar and preservatives. — Larry Holt, Ken Combs Running Store Many dental problems can be prevented. Don't wait until you have a problem to see the dentist. Preventative care helps to avoid cavities and gum disease and is less expensive than treating these dental problems after they arise. — Kentuckiana Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Associates, PSC Oral pain medications have many disadvantages. They take time to work, have side effects and must be taken by the patient at scheduled times. Another disadvantage of oral pain medication is that over time, the body can become accustomed to its dosage, requiring higher doses to manage pain. — Dr. Ajith Nair, Kentuckiana Pain Specialists Special Advertising Section
