28 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.16 SPACES It's been nearly a year since Steve Conley opened Heroes Comics and Gaming on Baxter Avenue, offering a wide selection of comics and games and, he says, the "largest play space in town." (During my visit, gamers fill the vast "gaming hall," playing Call of Duty, laughing as they blow off heads, cursing as their heads get blown off.) Since opening, the most surpris- ing attraction at Heroes has been… the bathroom. It's a replica TARDIS — that's "Time and Relative Dimen- sion in Space," duh — a boxy, blue phone booth that travels through time in the BBC's decades-old sci-fi series Doctor Who. One couple came into the store and spent nearly 40 minutes posing for pho- tos in front of the TARDIS. Conley's business partner, Kevin Stich, had the idea for the TARDIS when the two of them were con- sidering locations for their store. The bathroom that would become an homage to geekdom was merely a blank cube oddly placed in the center of the room. "Let's make it a TARDIS," Stich said. They spent three weeks perfecting it. "It's the only TARDIS you can take a piss in," Conley says with a laugh. "When you're here, you can take a poo with Who." — Leah Blair THE BIT Photo by Terrence Humphrey
