[ Circuit>>Events ] What are the odds you'll like these five July events?
(ODDS-ON FAVORITE) 1:2 Forecastle X
Upside: We're kind of excited My Morning Jacket is headlining this three-day festival. (You've seen the cover of this magazine, right?)
Downside: Shhhhh: Don't tell anybody, but we're just as (maybe more, or is that blasphemy?) pumped for Deer Tick (pictured), whose best songs off Divine Providence are doused in booze and choking on a haze of cigarette smoke. "The Bump" chucks John McCauley's grizzly howl, tinkling keys, a sledgehammer of a gui- tar riff and some zip-a-dee-doo-dah whistling into a blender. Oh, yeah, on the CD booklet's cover: "This record was made in the year 2011. You should play this (expletive) as loud as possible."
(July 13-15. Prices vary. Waterfront Park, forecastlefest.com.) 6:1
Going for Gold: Selections from the Kebric Olympic Collection
Upside: To coincide with the 2012 summer games — U.S.A.! U.S.A.! — the Speed will display 24 Olympic torches (posters, too!) from the collection of Robert Kebric, who teaches ancient Greek and Roman history at the University of Louisville.
Downside: No word whether the Speed will be dis- playing Michael Phelps' bong.
(July 21-Aug. 26. Included with admission price. Speed Art Museum, 634-2700, speedmuseum.)
5:1 Waterfront Independence Festival
Upside: Cannons. Ba-bum-bum- bum-bum, bum-bum, bum, bum- bum. More cannons.
Downside: Yeah, that actually is our impression of the "1812 Overture."
10:1 Denny Crum Poker Open
Upside: Can't wait to take Crum's money.
Downside: Or not. "Mr. Crum? He's a super-good poker player, yes sir," Horseshoe poker clerk Bob Rabbeth says of the former U of L hoops coach.
(July 27-Aug. 4. Buy-ins vary, from $20 to $675. Horseshoe Casino Southern Indiana, (866) 676-7463, horseshoe- indiana.com.)
[24] LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 7.12
(July 3 & 4. Free. Waterfront Park, waterfrontindependencefestival. com.)
(LONGSHOT) 20:1
July in general. (With a few exceptions, this month's calendar is an arid wasteland.)
Upside: Go on a walk or something. Downside: It's pretty hot out there.
