LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.16 21 FLASHBACK August 1994 On the cover: Former U of L star defensive back Anthony Bridges, who didn't return for his senior season after being suspended from the team and accusing coach Howard Schnellenberger of discrimination against black players. Inside: Bridges, along with two other black football players, had been kicked out of the players' dormitory after violating a team policy prohibiting female visitors in the dorm. Schnellenberger said other violations led to Bridges' eventual suspension. He went on to play at the University of North Texas but never made it to the NFL. When asked about players not responding well to his iron fist, Schnellenberger said, "Then they chose the wrong school, didn't they?" (The university's investigation did not find sufficient evidence supporting Bridges' charge of racial discrimination.) "A New Niche for Nude Dancing" explored the city's efforts to regulate adult- entertainment businesses. "Not only are the new clubs clean, but they cater to their new clientele with such upscale features as valet parking, satellite television and fax machines." A state agency known as the Kentucky Long-Term Policy Research Center invited Kentuckians (legislators, mayors, journalists, etc.) to ask questions about what the commonwealth would look like in 2024. Some of the responses: Is coal still a viable industry? Is tobacco still an important cash crop? Has the quality of the state's education system improved? Outside: August '94 Courier-Journal headlines: "Jones tells agency to plan downtown Louisville bridge"; "WAVE-3 TV pioneer George Patterson dies"; "Clinton cutout steals Fancy Farm show"; "Nicotine is addictive, FDA panel says." — Margo Morton alicenter.org/awards ypal.org/connect
