LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.16 19 There are children to put to bed and an ancient grumpy dog to walk and Monday morning's presence embedding like a splinter. Sunday evening, so ripe for wallowing. The remedy: cold beer, bustling patio at dusk and the jazzy, bluegrass-y, polka power tunes of Squeeze-bot. For years now, the quartet (accordion, banjo, tuba and drums) has struck joy into Sundays at Germantown's Nachbar. The free shows only happen during the summer and end Labor Day weekend. I was a regular about four years ago. Life got busy. I forgot. I missed out. On a recent July evening, I make my way back. So much remains the same — Newports and pint glasses monopolizing tabletops, facial hair catching beer foam, fingers and toes tap-tapping along to music so happy even the guy by himself in the corner never stops smiling. Everyone's smiling, really. All generations accounted for, clapping extra loud for a cover of Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science" that soars when punctuated by the accordion and tuba. The Nachbar is reliably casual, comfortable. Dogs are welcome. No frills, no fuss. Chatter all about, a few guys playing chess, one girl plowing through Pabst and heartache ("Like, literally, I do not care anymore…"). I lose sight of Sunday. My short legs dangle and swing above the ground on a bench that's just too tall. There are worries somewhere. Not here. The sky is blue. The moon is a quiet guest, halved and distant. Every few minutes, planes on final descent disappear behind the stage. Soon it will be time to head home, a Squeeze-bot send-off, just the lullaby I need. — AM A BIT TO DO Photo by Casey Chalmers ymcalouisville.org
