26 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 7.16 THE BIT FLASHBACK July 1995 On the cover: Best Local Athlete Samaki Walker, wearing a now-retro Converse U of L basketball windbreaker. Inside: An image of an upright Walker and a doughnut formed the number "10" to celebrate our 10th-annual Best of Louisville awards, including best "Oriental" restaurant (August Moon) and best video-rental store (Red Giraffe). The BoL ballot had three "provocative, open-ended questions" for readers to answer: best location for a new bridge ("East End," "downtown," "over the river," "build a tunnel," "forget the whole thing"); best solution for Fairgrounds traffc problems ("another losing season," "teach people to drive," "shuttle buses or trams designed by Disney engineers," "hire Roseanne to be the traffc cop," "send people to New York City and they'll realize this is just a minor irritant"); and best way to change Louisville ("secede from Kentucky," "two newspapers," "get a pro sports franchise," "fx that skunk smell," "close adult bookstores"). In a column, writer Andy Moore mentioned how he'd be returning to town for his 20-year high school reunion. Friends, he said, were always helpful with directions: "Drive to the corner of Bardstown Road and Eastern Parkway where White Castle used to be. Go past where the Uptown used to be and then hang a right where Karma used to be." Outside: July 1995 Courier-Journal headlines: "Police nab teen after dive from Kennedy Bridge"; "Pot couture? Lowly hemp is now the new hot fabric"; "Moving toward the Ali Museum"; "Eight historic Louisville structures remain on endangered buildings list"; "Frankfort Country Club no longer all-white"; "Light rail can revitalize a city, offcial says." — Jenny Kiefer eyecareinstitute.com nanzkraft.com
