FLASHBACK
May 1981
On the cover: Louisville cyclist and
neuroradiologist Dr. John Rice in a blurred
action shot.
Inside: Dr. Rice noted why cycling was such
great exercise ("Like swimming, it gives you
good aerobic exercise without hurting your
body") and why Louisville was a great place
to cycle ("You can safely ride from April
through October, both around town and
to places as far away as Cincinnati, French
Lick and Frankfort"). In a story about
Southern Indiana vacation spots — who's
ready for a bike ride? — we mentioned
Columbus, Madison and New Harmony,
the site of two failed utopian experiments.
The contemporary hotel in New Harmony
was sans TV, channeling the stark style of
the 19th century for modern-day visitors.
And speaking of TV, we also highlighted
new developments in electronics, noting
that, with the introduction of videotapes
and recorders, TV was becoming a
participatory sport: Viewers were fnally
able to watch whatever they wanted,
whenever they wanted. "Who knows? We
may all have our own TV stations some
day." (Basically, we predicted Netfix.) We
also covered Louisville's industrial waste-
exchange program, "a sort of fea market
for manufacturers" that worked on the
concept that "one company's toxic waste
may be another company's raw material."
Outside: May 1981 Courier-Journal
headlines: "Indelicacies in the Infeld
Disgust Kings, Delight Fools at Sports
Event Loved by Both"; "US Proposes Free
Tuition as Desegregation Incentive";
"Defnition-of-Life Bill Intensifes Debate
About Embryo Rights."
