[ H+D>> Trends ] Major Mementos By Donna Andrews Russell Photos by John Nation There's more to Derby souvenirs than T-shirts, julep glasses, big hats, posters and a pocketful of losing tickets, as these two Kentucky artists can attest. Dishing on Horses Julie Wear has been horse crazy her whole life. "I've been drawing them ever since I can remember," the Indiana native says. While in grade school, she recalls, she drew a horse on the page of a difficult math test. Tough her arithmetic was poor, her doodling earned high marks from the teacher, who scrawled, "Great horse!" on her test paper. Tirty years ago she parlayed that passion for horses into a career as an equine paint- er. She took up a brush and "learned (oil) technique through trial and error," she says.
