The Forum at Brookside Ofers Tips in Choosing a Retirement Community By Bill Hulsey, Executive Director, Te Forum at Brookside Whether you are planning ahead for your own future retirement or doing the legwork for a loved one there are a few practical points to ponder: You are paying for people! Inquire about the executive chef 's background, the nursing director's credentials and the selection philosophy used in hiring employees — housekeepers, servers, maintenance technicians, recreation directors, etc. Is the community a certifed Continuing Care Retirement Community? Most folks hope they will never need skilled nursing care or rehab therapy, but you sure sleep better knowing it's there! Ask the opinion of those you trust! Check in with friends already living there. Ask to see their residence or inquire about how they like the staf, food, responsiveness of maintenance, health services and social events. Do they feel at home? Are they glad they moved? Eat a meal or two! Is the service prompt? Ask what percentage of food is made from scratch. Not only is most "scratch made" food better, it's better for you! And, don't forget to check the menu variety (number of entrees, soups and sides). Check out the organization. How long has the management staf been on the job? High turnover can signal problems that trickle down to the customers. Also, is the parent organization held accountable? Public companies are held to a high standard of scrutiny. Be a wise consumer and buy the very best for your retirement dollars!
