Included on their wish list: two bedrooms, a playroom, a full bath and laundry facilities upstairs for the kids; a first-floor master suite with a walk-in closet and bath; a great room; and finally, a home studio for Jay, who earns his living as a por- trait, wedding and event photographer. Del Prince says the greatest challenge was making the addition look "like it was always there," while meeting the Mays' de- sire for a more contemporary, updated feel. At times, they butted heads. "I originally wanted to flow the kitchen into the new great room," Jay recalls, but Del Prince wanted to separate them, she says, "because each room in the (original) house was dis- tinct." Te compromise: a broad arch that provides visual separation but doesn't im- pede the flow. While Del Prince worked on blueprints, Laura filled a binder with ideas. "I pulled clips from here and there," she says, not- ing that the great room's eating area came straight from a Candice Olson book, while a Lowe's circular inspired the details on the arched openings and bookcases. Construction got under way in early 2010.
