W hen Jay and Laura May pur- chased their 1,100-square-foot Belknap neighborhood home in 1998, they knew it was small, but with two bedrooms and one bath, it was big enough for two. And what it lacked in size it made up for in other ways. First, it was in the Highlands, where both of them grew up. Ten there were the charming original 1947 details inside — glass doorknobs, arches between the living areas, a built-in telephone nook in the hall. Te yard was huge by neighborhood stan- dards and the house had an unfinished attic and basement, making future expansion a real possibility. Tey spruced it up and had the living and dining rooms faux-painted by Stephen Rusk of Faux and Mural Specialty Paint- ing. Finishing the attic and basement, however, remained a pie-in-the-sky project until three dogs and the 2007 birth of their daughter Maggie forced them to confront the size issue head on. At first they considered moving, but 2008's economic downturn put a halt to their house hunting. Financially, it was smarter to stay put and add on, Laura says. So they switched gears and hired architect Anne Del Prince to come up with a plan to not only finish the second story, but also create a home they could live in the [74] LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 2.12
