LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 7.15 67 M moments N P O nap psychedelic onstage? This year's top-billed artist, Grammy-collecting Brit Sam "Stay With Me" Smith, underwent vocal-cord surgery in May. Estimated recovery time? Six to eight weeks, which is awfully close to his Friday headlining slot at Forecastle. (After a similar surgery, Adele took off more time than that before performing live.) If Smith's pipes recover in time, Forecastle will be the frst stateside stop on his tour, which begins in Europe in early July. We asked McKnight to list 10 of his favorites in the history of Forecastle. 1. My Morning Jacket, "One Big Holiday," 2012 2. Jack White, "Blue Moon of Kentucky/Icky Thump /99 Problems/Misirlou," 2014 3. Shipping News, entire performance, 2005 in Cherokee Park 4. Girl Talk, encore with 300- plus fans onstage, 2007 at the Belvedere 5. Sleater-Kinney, "Jumpers," 2006 at the Mellwood Arts Center 6. Pretty Lights, "I'm on a Boat," late-night performance aboard the Belle of Louisville, 2009 7. Band of Horses, "Is There a Ghost," 2008 during Halfway to Forecastle 8. Robert Plant, "Going to California," 2013 9. Avett Brothers, "Talk On Indolence," 2009 at the Belvedere 10. Sleigh Bells, "Comeback Kid," 2012 And some of our own. (Flip back to the letter "J" for a few more) 1. The Flaming Lips' Wayne Coyne emerging from a plastic bubble over the crowd in 2010. 2. Mimosa's heavy bass between two tree-covered hills at Waterfront Park that same year. 3. Gary Clark Jr. playing the blues in a drizzle last year. 4. Taking cover under a highway overpass as a crazy storm swept in during Robert Plant's set two years ago. 5. Outkast opening with "Bombs Over Baghdad" last year. 6. Deer Tick's John McCauley mixing his own drink in a Big Gulp-sized cup onstage, then sipping it through a straw before and during the band's Sunday-afternoon set in 2012. 7. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals two years ago. 8. Ditto Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. 9. All 25 songs Jack White played last year. He bookended his set with White Stripes songs "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" and "Seven Nation Army." Wow. 10. Beck opening with "Devil's Haircut" last year. And this year, we can't wait for… 1. Modest Mouse playing "Out of Gas," "Trailer Trash," "Little Motel" and everything off 2007's We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank. And "Lampshades on Fire" off their new album. 2. People Under the Stairs songs "Acid Raindrops" and "Montego Slay" setting the Forecastle ship off on good vibes Friday. 3. Whatever MMJ decides to cover. 4. Whatever the War on Drugs plays off Lost in the Dream. 5. Whatever Portugal. The Man plays off Evil Friends. 6. Over the Rhine's harmonies. 7. Jeff the Brotherhood's riffs. 8. Dear Cage the Elephant: Please play lots of songs off your self-titled debut from 2008. 9. Sam Smith's crooning…as long as his vocal cords have recovered from that surgery in May. 10. Is Diarrhea Planet really a thing or is the Forecastle lineup just messing with us?
