My Morning Jacket's frontman has been
responsible for some of our favorite
Forecastle moments in recent years: In 2012,
MMJ covered Elton John's "Rocket Man," and
a year later James, touring behind his solo
album, covered "Let It Be" by the Beatles.
Does James approach a Louisville setlist
differently than other cities?
"The setlist we always do day by day,
usually a couple hours before the show. If
you had a hard, sad day, you're feeling more
in that mood; if you had a great, happy day,
you're feeling more in that mood. Louisville
show days, depending where we're at in the
tour, can be super-hectic. If you're in the
middle of the tour, you're like, 'Shit, I'm home
for 12 hours, and I've gotta see everybody
and do this, this and this.' Or it can be real
recharging," James says. "Playing Louisville
is different than anywhere else. There's so
much energy from all directions: people you
love, people you remember from high school
— the line goes back so far. It's a trip. So
many extra people are in your energy feld.
I'm not labeling it a good or a bad thing. It's
just super-intense. We defnitely do try to
make the shows special."
This year, let's hope the band is having a
happy Forecastle Saturday.
