LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 7.15 51 Best Locally Headquartered Bank Republic Bank That banking has changed dramatically over the years is something Carolle Jones Clay, Republic Bank's vice president and managing director of community relations, is familiar with. Clay got her frst job in 1975 as an "ATM demonstrator" at Mid-City Mall, where the frst machine was installed in Kentucky. "There were several 'service tree elves,' as they called us," she says. The bank she was working for at the time had her wear an elf costume, which drew folks from Bardstown Road over to look at the contraption. "I would simply show people how to insert cards and push buttons," Clay says. "It was so foreign. A lot of people didn't trust the machine or putting their money in there. Who can believe that from an ATM comes all this newfangled stuff with iPhones and apps?" The 59-year- old has been in banking ever since, having been hired at Republic 18 years ago. She most recently worked at PNC/Citizens Fidelity, but when many of its employees left town for Pittsburgh in the midst of consolidation, she says she couldn't leave. "I'm homegrown," she says. "I need to stay here." — MCA PEOPLE'S CHOICE Best View of the City From the City Of the Coper & Kings tasing rom 1111 E. CRITIC'S CHOICE Photo by Ted Tarquinio What's Louisvile mising right now? "A vibrant bike-share program. Every up-and-coming city has quality bicycles available for rent on racks throughout the city. It's a sign of a progressive, 21st-century lifestyle and community. While a quick Internet search shows Louisville does have a bike share, its scope can be described as limited at best. The entire Metro Council, not just the mayor, must get onboard with an expanded program." — Eric Flack, WAVE-TV Troubleshooter "The ocean...and everything that comes with it." — Bea Chamberlain, El Mundo owner "A dog park with a lake so the dogs can get in a good swim once in awhile." — Laura Shine, WFPK-FM DJ "I would like to see us retain more college graduates and young professionals instead of losing a signifcant percentage to other cities." — Lynda Lambert, radio co-host on 102.3 The Max "I miss the press box at Churchill Downs [which was torn down to make room for the Mansion]. It was the best in the country, and I loved to hang out there even when I wasn't covering the races." — Billy Reed, former Sports Illustrated and Courier-Journal writer "A good soul food restaurant downtown." — Edward Lee, restaurateur "A professional sports team. I know the Bats and Louisville City FC are professional teams, but I'd like to see an NFL or NBA team." — Candyce Clifft, WDRB-TV anchor What wil Louisvile be like in 30 year? "Thirty years hence, Louisville will have regenerated life next to the Ohio River west of Ninth Street, connecting a solidly multicultural business corridor from Shawnee Park to the Water Tower." — Terry Meiners, WHAS radio and TV personality "The downtown scene will be thriving, with more hotels, restaurants, local shops, business offces, living spaces and special events that will lead to people actually living in the downtown area." — Kathy Cary, Lilly's Bistro chef/owner "I am looking forward to the completion of the Louisville Loop within 30 years." — Crawford Wells, W.W. Cousins owner "My hope is that it will be more urbanized with world- class public transit, but my fear is more suburban sprawl." — Dave Bell, downtown YMCA director
