LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 2.15 87 kyelderlaw.com OUT TO SEE Continued from page 43 E Meet Austin. Nachbar. Y'all are both bounc- ing about to a Devo tribute band. He talks kayaks. Invites you to a "Kayak for Beginners Class" he teaches at JCC or JCTC, you can't remember. When the Sunday night class is cancelled, feel relief. Deny dinner. Feel bad for not giving that piece a chance, but it's al- ready been Saturday, and Saturday you spent with Mike, felt pull, found answer. E You're walking home from a friend's house, kicking a Mountain Dew Code Red bottle. You arrive to your house right as Michael pulls up. Wonder timing, magnetism. Kick the Code Red bottle at his car. Kentucky is going through another one of her mood swings, and this January Saturday is warm. Te sun still up, the two of you go to Cher- okee Park. Start at a trail beyond the playground. He picks up a huge, gold, freckly leaf. Share jokes (most of yours learned from Rusty, the "beef jerky man": You like bacon? Pause. Wanna strip?), best pick-up lines (his over- heard at some hole-in-the-wall: Man asked a lady for a quarter, said, "I got to use the pay phone, tell my mom I just found my wife."), defowering stories, dreams, visions, past. You are more honest now than you have been with any stranger. Share yourself unreserved- ly. Wonder if it's him, or grown you. Decide both. When you go to kiss him, miss, hit above the mouth. He lets you try again. On a bridge above the creek, watch the water fow in snaky waves beneath the frozen ice. Wonder how the fsh survive. Watch as a fox passes by. Walking across a feld, he says, "You're glowing, Reyna." (Reyna is your middle name, meaning "queen." You've always want- ed to be called that and he crowns you often without knowing this desire.) Cover your face, say, "Is the cold turning my cheeks pink?" "No, you're glowing," he says, staring right at you with those squinty gray-greens. Look at him, smiling. Ten have no idea where you are. Say, "We're lost. We've got to get back before sun goes down. We can't miss the party." Take his arm in yours, gallantly. "Here, this way." E At some point on the walk he tells you he's leaving. Out to Colorado and then on west with a buddy of his for several months or more, who knows really.
