84 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 2.15 A little fuff ball jumps into Frank D'Amato's lap. The 38-year-old writer/ life coach/real-estate fipper pets the dog's shaggy head, rattling its yin-yang dog tag, and talks Moth StorySLAM. The open-mic compe- tition originated in New York and features true stories centered on a predetermined theme — rivalry, resourcefulness, cravings, blunder. Louisville's division is now in its fourth season. D'Amato frst participated in September 2012. He won on his frst try and a few times after. He's too cool to remember how many. D'Amato's method: Write about discover- ing your father's secret second family when you were 11. "I found his car in a different neighborhood, went ringing bells door to door," he says. Memorize it. Read it aloud. Time it. Longer than fve minutes? Cut it. Read it again. Cut it again. Take the stage at Headliners. Audience eyes like St. Elmo's fre. Don't get lost. Five minutes. Focus. Panic. Ignore the tingle running up your arm. Don't pass out. Win! Go home. Realize that reciting a story sounds contrived. Don't recite. Tell. Write a script. Know the framework, what to cover. Don't memorize. Tell the story to your dog. Time it. Too long. Cut it. Tell the dog. Bark! Yes, too long. Cut it. Take the stage. Oh my God, my hands are numb. Win again. And again. Write, tell, cut. Take the stage. Relax. Step into the lone light and sing. Catch the Moth Feb. 10 at Headliners.
