LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 2.15 83 Mikhail Shulz slips through the crowd in the Jewish Community Center's lobby, platinum-blond hair fashing between dark winter coats on this January evening. He goes through a doorway and de- scends a staircase. Screechy voices echo from a room to his left. Munchkins, ages 4 to 14. Shulz darts past the kids and ducks into a dressing room. The 29-year-old makeup artist has already given the kids their wigs, and he wants nothing more to do with them. "Especially in this season, sick season," he says. "Snotty noses everywhere. My nightmare." Shulz can't get sick. The Wizard of Oz starts in 30 minutes (JCC will stage Once on This Island this month), and he has to check on the lead actors. Then he'll be off to Play, the Butchertown nightclub, to perform in drag. He waves his way through a menagerie of Oz residents, all of them wearing his glittering green designs. Then he fnds her: Kristy, his wicked witch. He smoothes her wig with his fngers. "The green makeup was interesting," he says. "Didn't get my ear enough last time," Kristy says. A forest's worth of green makeup containers covers the counter, ready for her face. "The other option that was about to happen is to do your face in green hairspray color. It doesn't really hurt you that much," Shulz says. "Much?" the witch says. "I like that. Much." — Dylon Jones Behind the Scenes Painting faces on the yellow- brick road arts the bits
