82 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.14 food drink wfpk.org 502 Cafe (food truck): Giant Turkey Leg Check Facebook for locations If you've ever roamed a Renaissance fair you know the joy of an unreasonably sized turkey leg. Indeed, any food you can clutch in your sweaty fst as you fercely tear fesh from the top with your teeth is perfect for holiday stress reduction. Call it meat therapy. The two-pound turkey legs from 502 Cafe (which dubs itself a "traveling BBQ experience" — fle that under "restaurant classifcations that would make excellent band names") is an oft- repeated and oft-requested special menu item. 502 Cafe also sells a mean bourbon-bacon jam by the jar, which is practically guaranteed to improve any aspect of your meal. Frank's Meat and Produce: Turkey Sandwich 3342 Preston Hwy., 363-3989, franksmeatandproduce.com The frst rule of Frank's Meat and Produce is that we don't talk about Frank's Meat and Produce — we want to keep it all to ourselves. Frank's has an excellent deli counter, where you can get an ace turkey sandwich. During the holidays, Frank's also provides cooked or uncooked turkeys, sourced from an Indiana farm. You could feasibly buy your whole holiday meal from Frank's Meat and Produce. Just don't tell anyone else about it, OK? Thanks. Vietnam Kitchen: Mock Duck 5339 Mitscher Ave., 363-7535, vietnamkitchen.net For those adhering to a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, the holiday season can be a lonely time full of bland side dishes and various relatives making accusations about impending iron defciency. Show the vegetarian or vegan in your life you respect their choices and take them for the Mì can xào dau (mock duck with stir-fry green beans) at Vietnam Kitchen. It's not quite turkey dinner, but it defnitely beats Tofurky. The Fixins Mussel and Burger Bar: Sweet Potato Fries 9200 Taylorsville Road, 384-4834 Everyone knows the best part of any sweet potato dish is drowning out all possible nutritional value by adding teeny, toasted marshmallows or crunchy brown-sugar pecans. In the spirit of sweet potato casserole, Mussel and Burger Bar has sweet potato fries with a smoked pineapple dipping sauce. Not to YAMmer on, but the fries are also available on the take-out menu, if you're not in the mood to sit through one of M+BB's famously lengthy waits. The Exchange Pub + Kitchen: Roasted Squash Salad 118 W. Main St., New Albany, Ind., (812) 948-6501, exchangeforfood.com Giving Louisvillians a reason to cross the bridge, the Exchange has a to-die-for roasted squash salad with with ricotta, toasted pumpkin seeds and balsamic vinaigrette. Order the smashed Yukon gold potatoes with butter and cream, the sweet potato mash with fried horseradish, and the braised local greens and you've got a veritable cornucopia of side dishes for your holiday table. Their cleverly named Cider House Rules cocktail with rum and hot cider would be the perfect addition to this feast. MilkWood: Collards with Kimchee 316 W. Main St., 584-6455, milkwoodrestaurant.com One side on MilkWood's menu stands out as holiday-worthy: the collard greens with kimchee. The scallops and smoked turkey at chef Ed Lee's Southern-Asian restaurant are also guaranteed to bring a multi-cultural fare to pre-celebration drinks, hopefully with your cool cousins. Blue Dog Bakery and Cafe: Bread 2868 Frankfort Ave., 899-9800, bluedogbakeryandcafe.com Nobody in Derby City does carbs better than Blue
