80 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 12.14 THE TASTING MENU highlandcleaners.com By Elizabeth Myers Louisville Magazine publishes its comprehensive restaurant listings in EATS, issued each fall and available year-round on newsstands. For this month's Tasting Menu, we focused on restaurants that offer traditional (or not-so-traditional) holiday foods: the birds, the fxins and the desserts. Be thankful to live in such a great culinary town. (Or you could skip this list entirely and just buy a country ham from Morris' Deli on Taylorsville Road and be done with it.) The Birds Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot and Smokehouse: Smoked Turkey 3204 Frankfort Ave., 895-3223, frankfortavenuebeerdepot.com The Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot's website is a work of modern art, with all-caps quotes like, "IF IT AIN'T BARBECUE IT AIN'T FOOD I DIDN'T CLAW MY WAY UP THE FOOD CHAIN JUST TO EAT VEGETABLES" and the oddly capitalized "We Rub the Best Butts…in Louisville KY." It is actually possible to order 25 pounds of meat from the Frankfort Avenue Beer Depot as part of a "100-Person" meal, which would completely absolve you from any holiday cooking duties whatsoever. But if you're just looking for the bird, FABD sells smoked whole turkeys during the holiday season. The English Grill at the Brown Hotel: Hot Brown 335 West Broadway, 583-1234, brownhotel.com A mainstay on the "stuff you can only fnd in Louisville" lists (and who doesn't love reading 18 of those on your Facebook feed every day!), the Hot Brown is, in the spirit of Christmas leftovers, a turkey sandwich, albeit one immediately improved by being smothered in cheese sauce and bacon. Could you go all hostess-with-the- mostest and order these from the English Grill as part of your Louisville-themed holiday? Indeed you could. You could also use the Brown's recipe for the famed sandwich, available online. Holiday Edition
