118 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 10.14 THE SPREAD food drink Left to right, top to bottom: The campfre breakfast jar ($10) is a popular remnant from the Place Downstairs. "I think there would have been riots if we'd taken it off the menu," manager Rick Moir says. Served with toasted crackers, the breakfast jar has a fuffy layer of warm ricotta topped with toasted walnuts, maple syrup, sea salt and a smoked poached egg. The roasted chicken ($30) comes with a crispy panzanella salad and salsa verde. "These are bigger, more sharable dishes. It's refned but still rustic," chef de cuisine Allan Rosenburg says. Much of the pasta is made in-house, including the gnocchi ($17) with sausage, ricotta, San Marzano tomatoes and oven-roasted fennel. Tender baby octopus ($11) is served with olive aioli and a zesty squeeze of charred lemon. Pastry chef Christian Cobos makes Cena's desserts, including zeppoles ($8) stuffed with sweetened ricotta and dusted with powdered sugar. Perfect for dunking in a Nutella dipping sauce.
