Berry Norton Surgical Specialists— Breast Health No one wants to go "under the knife," but when surgery is neces- sary, we all want to be assured that the person wielding the scalpel is experienced, well-trained and an expert in his or her feld. Fortu- nately, as a regional medical center and the home of a well-regard- ed medical school, Louisville has no shortage of capable surgeons. But which are the most capable, or at least the most highly re- garded by the experts who know them best — their colleagues in the medical profession? Tat's what we attempted to fnd out in this year's survey of doctors. Every other year, Louisville Magazine surveys members of the Greater Louisville Medical Society to fnd out which physicians colleagues think are the top doctors in primary-care felds and many medical specialties. We last published those "Top Doctors" results in 2013. Tis year we focused our survey on surgeons only and, rather than ask the more general question of who are the top cardiac or orthopedic surgeons, as we do in our biannual survey, we decided to zero in on specifc surgical procedures. Here, then, are the results of this year's "Top Surgeons" survey on 41 commonly performed surgical procedures. Te top surgeons are listed alphabetically in each category. Top Surgeons Survey Methodology Our Top Surgeons were selected through a survey that was mailed in April 2014 to all active physicians who are members of the Greater Louisville Medical Society. In the survey we asked the question: "Which Louisville-area physician(s) would you choose or recommend most highly to perform the following procedures if you or a family member required surgery?" We asked the respondents to list up to three physicians in order of preference for each surgical procedure. We received a total of 172 completed surveys. We assigned scores of three points to each doctor listed in the frst position in each category, two points for second position and one point for third position. To qualify as a "top surgeon" for the purposes of this list, a physician generally had to receive a score that placed him or her in the top one-ffth of the total number of surgeons who received mention in a given category. Because some surgical-procedure categories had a greater number of respondents and doctors mentioned than others, and because of tie scores, the total number of doctors listed varies among categories.
