128 LOUISVILLE MAGAZINE 8.14 Chill Out On hot summer evenings, while most of us slow-roast in our cars in after-work traffc, Steve Stewart is one to envy. He's usually behind his house off Watterson Trail in Highview, in his chilled garage that includes a walk-in freezer ft for a butcher. His medium: crystal-clear, waist- high blocks of ice. The 46-year-old Louisville native got into ice sculpting after working events as a bartender and culinary student. He opened Louisville Ice Sculptures in 1993. Each year, he does approximately 200 pieces and carves up some 60,000 pounds of ice. He makes a lot of drink luges and ice bars for weddings. On a recent weekday he was transforming a three-foot tall, 300-pound block of ice into a set of hearts and doves. He uses a small chainsaw, a die grinder with two different tips, and two different kinds of chisels. "People always ask me how I do it so fast," Stewart says. "I tell them, 'Well, it wasn't always that way!'" Challenging ice jobs have included a pair of nudes in pornographic pose commissioned for a party and the Nintendo characters Mario and Princess Peach. "The real fulfllment is getting the chance to be creative, to make something out of nothing," Stewart says. "And it's rewarding when you pull up at an event and everyone stops to look at what you made. It's a feeling of accomplishment. It makes you feel like a super-being." — Tyler Curth Photo by Aaron Kingsbury
